Reply, and I will give you a letter. Find five songs that start with that letter, and then post them in your own journal.
Ally gave me the letter F, so I got to look for F-words:
1) "Fuck You Aurora" by Alkaline Trio - I just couldn't pass this one up. Come on, I'm looking for F-words. Plus, it'll make a great theme song if I ever get fired from/quit my job at Aurora Microsystems.
2) "Fear Of Dying" by Jack Off Jill - F-ing awesome song. Probably my favourite of theirs.
3) "Follow You Down" by Gin Blossoms - Let's face it, 90s rock is just awesome. And everyone knows this song. If you don't, download it and listen to it. Or ask me to send it to you (if you can't download). I'll be happy to oblige.
4) "Faggot" by Mindless Self Indulgence - Too many people would kill me if I left this one out - primarily Kitty. Not that I'd want to of course. Another prime F-word.
5) "Frozen" by Tegan and Sara - Love this song. Love that whole album actually... but this is definitely in my top 5 of their songs. I sincerely thank Sarah for making me sit down and listen to all three of their albums. In a row.
And just because I'm a music fanatic, and I was only able to choose five, I want to mention those that didn't make the list.
Other praiseworthy F-songs: AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), Alkaline Trio - Fall Victim, Alkaline Trio - Fatally Yours, Barenaked Ladies - Falling For The First Time, blink-182 - Feeling This, Brand New - Failure By Design, Evanescence - Farther Away (Live), Flyleaf - Fully Alive, Great Big Sea - Feel It Turn, Linkin Park - Faint, Pennywise - Fight It, Sarah McLachlan - Fear, The Weekend - Flipside, Unloco - Face Down |

Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from. Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
1. "Our last day of summer, 1979..." 2. "Hold onto me love, you know I can't stay long" 3. "God bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime" 4. "From the minute that I saw her she was different from the rest, but I didn't hear her talking, I was staring at her chest" 5. "Do as I say, not as I do, because the shit's so deep, you can't run away" 6. "Always assuming the worst, but you're going on nonetheless" 7. "Hey, come this May, we'll be running in the sun again" (solved by Biff in person) 8. "When she walks she swings her arms instead of her hips" 9. "I'm everything you know, you wonder friend or foe, I'm the burning in your throat when you swallow" 10. "When you're on a holiday, you can't find the words to say..." 11. "I'm just another little faggot with a problem, fuckin' around over someone else's hard-on" 12. "Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete" 13. "Hey! Do you believe there's anything beyond troll-guy reality?" 14. "What just happened, did you kiss me?" 15. "Every time I look at you, the world just melts away" 16. "We used to leave the blue lights on, and there was a beat" 17. "Drink down the gin and kerosene" 18. "Another dream that will never come true, just to compliment your sorrow" 19. "Maybe when the room is empty, maybe when the bottle's full" 20. "Ayer conoci, un cielo sin sol, y un hombre sin suelo"
I will be very interested to see who gets each song. Enjoy. |

| | Finger Eleven - Thousand Mile Wish | ] | List ten musical artists that you like, and then go answer the questions.
1) Green Day 2) Barenaked Ladies 3) Yellowcard 4) Too Far North 5) Alkaline Trio 6) Great Big Sea 7) Jack Off Jill 8) Tegan and Sara 9) Fall Out Boy 10) The Weekend
What was the first song you ever heard by 6? Hard to remember, as it was a long time ago... Probably "When I'm Up (I Can't Get Down)" or "It's the End of the World as We Know It"
What is your favourite album of 8? This Business of Art
What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung? There are tons, but this is definitely one of them. Makes for a really great breakup song.
You have every right to be This appalled with me Join the club I signed up a long time ago and I know how you feel And when you decked me You left me knocked out on the floor I came to bloodied up, but you weren't around I picked my teeth off the ground like they'd been there before
How many times have you seen 4 live? Oh wow... Every chance I got.
What's your favourite song of 7? Tough choice. Probably "Underjoyed".
What is a good memory you have concerning the music of 10? "Into the Morning" will always remind me of the nights and days following my return from Europe.
Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad? Several, especially during the week at the farmhouse. But there's one that always reminds me of September 2004: Empty Apartment. Sorry Biff.
What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung? I'm a few bricks short of a load, but a full load always hurt my back
I thought that Alcohol was just for those with nothing else to do I thought that drinking just to get drunk was a waste of precious booze But now I know that there's a time and there's a place where I can choose To walk the fine line between self-control and self-abuse
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight You gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight
What is your favourite song by 9? "Grand Theft Autumn (Where Is Your Boy)"
How did you get into 5? I'm not sure if Alex or Jesse told me about them first, but between the two of them, it was inevitable.
What's your favourite song by 4? "Pass Me By"
How many times have you seen 9 live? None, unfortunately.
What is a good memory you have concerning 2? Singing along to "Crazy" and "Grade 9" (among others) in Jocelyn's car on our first date.
Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad? On the contrary. Tegan and Sara music always seems to make me happy.
What is your favourite song of 1? Also a tough choice. Either "Minority", "Misery", or "St. Jimmy". |

| | Soul Asylum - Runaway Train | ] | Call you up in the middle of the night Like a firefly without a light You were there like a slow torch burning I was a key that could use a little turning
So tired that I couldn't even sleep So many secrets I couldn't keep Promised myself I wouldn't weep One more promise I couldn't keep
It seems no one can help me now I'm in too deep There's no way out This time I have really led myself astray
Runaway train never going back Wrong way on a one way track Seems like I should be getting somewhere Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Can you help me remember how to smile Make it somehow all seem worthwhile How on earth did I get so jaded Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go I know what no one else knows Here I am just drownin' in the rain With a ticket for a runaway train
Everything is cut and dry Day and night, earth and sky Somehow I just don't believe it
Runaway train never going back Wrong way on a one way track Seems like I should be getting somewhere Somehow I'm neither here no there
Bought a ticket for a runaway train Like a madman laughin' at the rain Little out of touch, little insane Just easier than dealing with the pain
Runaway train never comin' back Runaway train tearin' up the track Runaway train burnin' in my veins Runaway but it always seems the same |

| | Alkaline Trio - Mercy Me | ] | Stolen from Toma and Gigs:
1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before? Went outside the country (Boston), travelled to Europe, met an online friend from halfway around the world, started university, went on a couple road trips with friends, and a couple things you probably don't want to hear about.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't make New Year's resolutions... And I kinda doubt I will this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes, my sister had a beautiful baby girl, Emma Caridade. I am an uncle twice-over.
4. Did anyone close to you die? Close... but no, thankfully.
5. What countries did you visit? United States, Switzerland, Italy and France.
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005? A direction in life... And I liked Gigs' answer too: a psychologist.
7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? March 9th - Marie broke up with me. April 1st - Jocelyn and I started dating. August 8th - I went to Geneva and spent the day with Gigs. August 10th - I saw Paris for the first time, hopefully not the last. August 18th - I got back home from Europe and met Jocelyn at the bus station.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I attended every TFN concert humanly possible.
9. What was your biggest failure? Many minor ones, nothing huge... Maybe my first-semester university marks.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Not so much injury, but I did nearly die from an illness.
11. What was the best thing you bought? I don't buy much... I'll say the souvenirs I brought back from Europe.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Alex, Marie, Steve, Jazz, Biff, Colleen, Jocelyn. I have my reasons.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Cat, Dan. Again, I have my reasons.
14. Where did most of your money go? Food.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Graduating high school, my European trip, meeting Gigs, my new cell phone.
16. What song will always remind you of 2005? Too Far North - The Battle of Lexington The Weekend - Into the Morning Fall Out Boy - Sugar We're Going Down
17. Compared to this time last year, are you: i. Happier or sadder? Happier for the most part. ii. Thinner or fatter? About the same. Maybe thinner. iii. Richer or poorer? Richer, hurray for Aurora.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Studying/schoolwork, exercise.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating, sitting bored in front of a computer screen (kinda like now).
20. How did you spend Christmas? I spent Christmas eve with Jocelyn and her family. It was nice. Christmas day was supposed to end with me seeing family in Kingston. It didn't happen.
21. There was no 21. Thanks for pointing it out.
22. Did you fall in love in 2005? Yes.
23. How many one-night stands? One, I suppose.
24. What was your favorite TV program? Dark Angel, Family Guy, Enterprise.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Yes.
26. What was the best book you read? Toss up between the Old Kingdom series (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) and the Kushiel's Dart series (Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen, Kushiel's Avatar).
27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Fall Out Boy, The Weekend, Alkaline Trio (well, Crimson was new), In Stereo, Ali Hill, Flyleaf, Metric, MSI, Reel Big Fish.
28. What did you want and get? A European trip, a bunch of great new friends.
29. What did you want and not get? Self-discipline.
30. What was your favorite film of this year? Sin City.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Direction.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005? Fashion?
34. What kept you sane? Friends.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Jessica Alba.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? George Bush being a fucking idiot.
37. Who did you miss? Jen, Jazz, Regan, Jocelyn. And absolutely everyone, when I was 6 time zones away.
38. Who was the best new person you met? Adrien Vauthey.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005: Things never go the way you expect them to.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: Quite frankly, a whole year - especially this one - cannot be summed up. And even if I thought it could, I would never be able to decide on just one lyric. |

| | The Used - Take it Away | ] | It's one of those nights... One where I'm stressing out over schoolwork and wondering why I'm even in university.
While I do have the skills and potential to be a good student, I just can't stand being in these classes and doing this work. I'm sick of school. It's no different than Lockerby, really - I'm just taking my classes in a different building, and it's easier to skip classes and not do the work. The only reason I'm even there is because I've been conditioned to believe that the only way I'll have a successful future is with a university degree. If I knew for a moment that weren't true... I'd jump at the chance to start making a career for myself here and now. Unfortunately, I understand the importance of a degree in this society - which just serves to frustrate me more, because I can't hack it as a university student.
I want a reason to try, motivation to work harder, a goal to work towards... But all I can think of is some tedious job I'll probably grow to hate. Not much motivation these days. So I try to think of something, anything I won't hate... But I have nothing I really want to do. No drive, no goals... Yeah, I always say I'd like a job in finance, but only because it's the only thing I seem to be even the slightest bit good at (which I'm starting to doubt now that I'm in university), and the only thing I have any experience with. There's no passion there, how could anyone be passionate about accounting? And while I try to find something I do like, I realize that I will have to work hard at it, no matter what it is. But as many of you know, I hate hard work of any sort, and I honestly can't think of a single thing that I actually enjoy, that could orient my career. And while I realize that a job isn't everything, it's not your whole life... The reality of it is that today, if you don't have a good job, you can't afford to lead a decent life.
I would love to hear something that would motivate me, that would tell me I belong in University... But I've been waiting for a while now. It all boils down to me thinking of myself as a lazy, unmotivated, helpless lowlife with no goals or direction for my future, leaving me miserable and frustrated with myself. Even if I do consider the route of leaving university, where do I go from there? I still have no direction and no goals. A lot of people my age have something like music or drama or art that they are truly passionate about. And I used to laugh at them, thinking they would gain nothing from following that path, in terms of a career. But I envy those people. They have something that they enjoy, something they're passionate about, even if it won't necessarily lead to a sucessful career... I don't even have that.
It never mattered before, you know? I used to lead my life like anyone else, not worrying about my future. I was going to go to school, and get a good job, just like my mom. Then I would settle down with someone and start a family. The latter part still sounds great. It's the former I'm having trouble with lately. I've just started to wake up to that, and consider my future. And I've got nothing.
...and here I am writing a long-winded journal post instead of studying for an exam I have tomorrow. And you wonder why I don't think I belong in university. |

Summer time and the wind is blowing outside In lower chelsea and I don’t know What I’m doing in this city The sun is always in my eyes It crashes through the windows And I’m sleeping on the couch When I came to visit you That’s when I knew I could never have you I knew that before you did Still I’m the one who’s stupid And there’s this burning Like there’s always been I never been so alone And I’ve Never been so alive
Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by The cigarette ash flies in your eyes And you don’t mind, you smile And say the world doesn’t fit with you I don’t believe you, you’re so serene Careening through the universe Your axis on a tilt, you’re guiltless and free I hope you take a piece of me with you
And there’s things I’d like to do That you don’t believe in I would like to build something But you'll never see it happen
And there’s this burning Like there’s always been I’ve ne ver been so alone And I’ve, I’ve never been so alive And there’s this burning There is this burning
Where’s the soul I want to know New York City's evil The surface is everything but I could never do that Someone would see through that And this is the last time We’ll be friends again I’ll get over you, you’ll wonder who I am
And there’s this burning Just like there’s always been I’ve never been so alone, alone And I’ve, and I’ve I've never been so alive So alive
I go home to the coast It starts to rain, I paddle out on the water Alone Taste the salt and taste the pain I’m not thinking of you again Summer dies and swells rise The sun goes down in my eyes See this rolling wave Darkly coming to take me Home
And I’ve never been so alone And I’ve never been so alive |
